• Meadow Pipit
A small, brown, streaky bird, it is the commonest songbird in upland areas and its high, piping call is a familiar sound. In flight it shows white outer tail feathers and in the breeding season it has a fluttering parachute display flight. In winter they are quite gregarious and gather in small flocks, often invisible among the vegetation, suddenly flying up with typical jerky flight. Meadow pipit numbers in the UK have been declining since the mid 1970s, resulting in this species being included on the amber list of conservation concern.

  • Hooded Crow
The hooded crow is closely related to the carrion crow, which until recently was regarded as the same species. In areas where the two species overlap there may be some interbreeding with hybrids showing a mixed grey and black body plumage. Like carrion crows, hoodies also feed on dead animals. Unlike crows they can be more sociable in the feeding habits and groups of them may be seen together in fields. Found in N and W Scotland, N Ireland, Ireland, and on the Isle of Man, where it replaces the carrion crow.

  • Red Knot
The adult Red Knot has short dark legs and a medium thin dark bill. Their body is mottled gray on top with a reddish face, throat and breast. In the winter it is pale gray all over.

There are 6 subspecies of the knot, one of which is severely endangered. The American subspecies has been predicted to be extinct as early as 2010 due to overfishing of their primary food source – the horseshoe crab in the Delaware Bay, a primary stopover point for this migrating bird.

This bird visits the UK shores in the winter, migrating south to Africa, and the areas surrounding Australia.
