  • Common Pochard
    The Common Pochard is an all-year resident here in the UK, known to breed in England, the lowlands of scotland, and now starting to breed in larger numbers in Ireland as well. This duck is superficially similar to the Redhead and the Canvasback ducks of North America.</br> This bird gathers in large numbers, frequently gathering with groups of tufted ducks. What's unique about this bird as it is known to hybridise with the Tufted Duck here in the UK.

  • Hardhead
    The Hardhead duck, sometimes still referred to as the White eyed duck, is the only true diving duck found in Australia. They are a common bird, and like other members of the pochard group, they feed by diving deeply for the aquatic creatures they feed off of. As a general rule these birds avoid costal waters.

  • Oystercatcher
    The Eurasian Oystercatcher, otherwise known as a Pied Oystercatcher or just Oystercatcher here in the UK is part of the oystercatcher family. Its the only one to occur here in the UK, although there are 3 subspecies of this oystercatcher in Europe and some of Asia. Its highly migratory but we are lucky enough to have this bird stay here year round. This bird as an adult has black above, white underneath, and a vividly red legs and bill which makes this striking bird really stand out amongst other waders. Despite its name, it does not primarily hunt for oysters, however its one of, if not the only wader to be able to pry open these tough creatures. What makes this bird really unique is that the shape of the bill varies depending on which type of food it specializes in. Birds that focus on molluscs have broad bill tips, where birds that specialize with unearthing worms tend to have pointed bills.

  • Chough
    While its black plumage identifies it as a crow, the chough (pronounced 'chuff') has a red bill and legs unlike any other member of the crow family. It has a restricted westerly distribution in the British Isles and because of its small population size and historically declining populations it is an Amber List species. It readily displays its mastery of flight with wonderful aerial displays of diving and swooping. Found in flocks in autumn and winter.
